Under China’s Trade Union Law workers have no freedom of association and cannot simply join a trade union of their choice. To be a legally recognised union, all trade unions must be affiliated to the ACFTU; all independent trade unions and other such organisation by workers is prohibited. The ACFTU was originally founded in 1925 but was then soon, under KMT rule, severely repressed. Following the 1949 revolution it was re-established and became China’s sole trade union organisation, which it has been ever since, bar a period when it was temporarily dissolved during the Cultural Revolution. By the end of 2009 total ACFTU membership had reached 226 million, which included 79.8 million are rural migrant workers.
